The Lady Anne Barnard Collection

A collection of four cotton tea towels featuring Lady Anne Barnard’s historic watercolours of the Cape, beautifully reproduced as a tribute to her curiosity, independence and remarkable way of seeing the landscape.

THE ARTIST

Lady Anne Barnard

1750 – 1825

When Lady Anne Barnard sailed for the Cape of Good Hope in 1797, she was already a quiet rebel — a self-taught artist and writer who penned the beloved ballad Auld Robin Gray when women published anonymously or not at all. At the Cape she refused the drawing-room life expected of the Castle’s first lady: she climbed Table Mountain, travelled the winelands by ox-wagon, and filled her sketchbooks with the mountains, farmsteads and everyday people of the Cape.

Two centuries on, she still reads like a modern woman: curious, unconventional, and determined to see things for herself. Each towel reproduces one of her watercolours — a small piece of her fearless looking, for your kitchen.
